Are you looking for a BC guest ranch-based hiking experience that allows you to immerse yourself in nature in the South Chilcotin Mountains Park?
“WHEN WE MINDFULLY IMMERSE OURSELVES IN A FOREST OF OLD GROWTH FIRS, OR SAUNTER THROUGH A THICKET OF BIRCHES AND ALDERS, WE CAN BE REJUVENATED AND RESTORED”
– ALAN DRENGSON AND DUNCAN TAYLOR, AUTHORS OF WILD FORESTERS PRACTICING NATURE
Join a guest ranch-based wilderness hiking expedition into the Chilcotin Ark, where wildlife tracking, conservation awareness, pack horse care, and backcountry living come together.
This is an active expedition, not a passive hiking holiday. Participants learn by taking part in the daily realities of wilderness travel: helping with ranch chores, preparing shared meals, learning tracking and observation skills, managing personal equipment, and adapting to weather and trail conditions.
Our guides provide leadership, teaching, logistical support, and a safe framework for travel. In return, we ask participants to bring curiosity, responsibility, flexibility, and a willingness to contribute to the group.
You may encounter wildlife, changing mountain weather, long days on the trail, simple camp conditions, and moments that challenge your comfort zone. These are not inconveniences to be removed; they are part of the learning experience.
On our ranch based hiking adventure, arrive at the ranch and enjoy lunch in our historic lodge at our BC guest ranch. Take a short hike from the ranch to get adjusted to the South Chilcotin Mountain area. Then review the itinerary with your guides, seeing how your adventure will build in difficulty as you push yourself to reach higher elevations and gain more experience in the wilderness.
Throughout the rest of your trip, take gradually longer or more challenging hikes. Learn about flora and fauna along the way and get involved in conservation projects such as species population counts, invasive species management and data collection to make your contribution to the wilderness you are benefitting from.
On your final full day, you have built on your hiking experience and skills and are now ready for a full day hike where you will hike through Douglas fir forests, break out into alpine meadows above tree line and hike to the mountain tops. Enjoy lunch in the alpine meadows where you can scout for grizzly and black bears, mule deer, mountain goats and maybe even a wolf. Spend the afternoon hiking back to the ranch, taking the opportunity to make the most of your nature connection.
On your final morning, live the ranch lifestyle as you learn how to do bareback riding, archery or biathlon target shooting or enjoy a final hike from the ranch before lunch with a last review of the week’s adventure.
If you are new to hiking and looking for a graduated program, or want less challenging hikes, our ranch-based hiking adventure is for you. With the ranch as our base and a huge variety of terrain on the hiking trails around us, this adventure can be tailored to your experience and fitness level.
Looking for the next level up from our ranch based hiking adventure? We also offer a hut based hiking adventure.
